A Grand misalignment
A(nother) podcast interview fell through. Also I did a gig and I don't think I liked it.
Hello! Wow, it has been quite a busy few weeks, so apologies for the delay between newsletters. A new podcast is in the editing suite as I write this, more on that later.
First of all, big thanks to Kenny Watt and Amy Albright (she changed her stage name) for letting me take to the mic last Sunday. My expected 5 minutes of mic time at April’s Too Grand night was in fact 10, so I had more than enough time to work out which aspects of my new material to keep and what to cut.
Unfortunately, I felt it could have been much better than it was. I was in the unusual situation of being able to hear my fellow comedians in the “green room” (a secluded portion of the room) and have conversations. I may have been distracted by this?
It’s difficult to say. However, you will be able to make your mind up, as the next podcast is framed around the evening in question! What’s more, I will be releasing the the podcast in audio, and as a video on my YouTube channel.
SATIRE
Speaking of YouTube, I spent way more time than is sensible creating a potentially viral video last week. The thinking behind this was to draw people into viewing the standup videos on the channel, and I think it worked out.
The video in question? Over 1 hour of failed SNP First Minister Humza Yousaf falling off his scooter. Think about it, this is the perfect illustration of his political career (watch his left foot), and is also funny.
It’s already the most popular video on my channel, and thanks to the ability to add notifications to videos, has helped my other videos.
What about that interview?
Back to the podcast. The reason I decided to take the “night in the life of a stand up beginner” approach was because I had hoped to be interviewing Amy earlier that day. Unfortunately, my kids were in a show which overran by around 90 minutes.
Consequently, I was running late, and had to be at Too Grand (where, um, yes Amy was also going to be, and yes, there is an argument for “why didn’t you just do the interview there?” but that wouldn’t have worked. Also, I had to pick the performing arts offspring up from their second show.).
However, I have good news: a slot is almost agreed to chat with Amy, and I also have a slot booked to chat with Kenny Watt.
Hopefully those will not take long to put together.
Out and about
I’ll finish off with some upcoming appearance news.
First of all, I’m at the Micklegate Social in York tonight (May 5th). I’ve been hoping to get on that event for a while, and had to turn one down recently due to a clash. It’s a Bank Holiday weekend, the audience could be rowdy, but I’m looking forward to it!
On Wednesday, May 15th, I’m back at Red Raw at The Stand, Newcastle. Another 5 minute slot, really hoping to impress.
I *think* I’m on Tyneside on Tuesday 21st at The Mirage, which is a restaurant. Not sure how my food-related jokes will work out there.
Finally (for now…!) I’m booked for a spot in a pub in Hartlepool on June 6th.
After that I’ll probably be taking a month-long break as I’m away in Prague. But if there are any English stand-up nights, I might take the opportunity…
